According to a report from KTVU, San Francisco (CA) Fire Department (SFFD) crews contained and extinguished a two-alarm fire on the third floor of a four-story a Corona Heights-Ashbury Heights apartment building Monday night. The SFFD posted on social media that rescues were in progress.
The fire engulfed two floors of the building, located at 400 Upper Terrace.
The SFFD received the first alert at 8:45 p.m. A fire department spokesperson said the fire was contained at around 9:45 p.m. By 11 p.m., the SFFD had brought the fire under control and was completely extinguished.
Officials also said firefighters rescued two people and several families from the building, with no injuries reported. However, there were still several pets missing.
SFFD officials said the fire spread to the fourth floor and the roof, with the wind contributing to its rapid spread.
SFFD Lieutenant Jonathan Baxter said the two people who needed to be rescued had to climb to the balcony because they could not access the hallway, and he lauded them for having an escape plan.
The SFFD said that 40 to 50 people have been displaced and asked the public to avoid the area for several hours.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and SFFD crews will stay on scene to monitor and remove any hot spots, allowing access to the fire investigator.
