At around 0700 hours on Saturday January 23, 2016, the Ferndale (MI) Fire Department responded to a reported house fire in Royal Oak Township.

While en route, heavy smoke was seen. Ferndale Engine 11-5 arrived on the scene to a two-story occupied dwelling fully involved. Command requested mutual aid from Hazel Park, Madison Heights, and Royal Oak fire departments.

Ferndale firefighters initiated a defensive attack due to heavy fire and condition of the structure. Royal Oak fire crews arrived on the scene and, per command, set up for aerial operations.

This fire was brought under control in approximately three hours using several handlines and Royal Oak Ladder Pipe. The dwelling was a total loss and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
