Red Caps Against Arson
New York City fire marshals in red caps and prominently-marked vehicles are part of an experimental arson control program instituted by the fire department to reduce arson fires, vandals and false alarms.
The department believes that making the marshals highly visible in the community while patrolling 24 hours a day, the neighborhoods will look out for possible arsonists and troublemakers will be discouraged. Flyers are also being distributed with a 24hour hotline number to increase publicity.
