According to a report from ABC15, a massive, violent fire erupted and burned for hours after propane tanks exploded Thursday afternoon near 40th and Washington streets in Phoenix, Arizona, at around 4 p.m.
Reports indicate that multiple propane tanks exploded, sending flames into the air and scattering hundreds of tanks over 500 yards in all directions. The exploded tanks were reported to have been about 70% full when they blew up.
Phoenix Fire Department (PFD) Captain Todd Keller said the blast launched projectiles and advised people to avoid the area. Nearby areas were evacuated as a precaution.
The incident occurred near Sky Harbor airport. Airport officials said the massive amounts of smoke from the fire did not impact its operations.
PFD crews operated on scene as area temperatures rose to above 110°F.
PFD officials said multiple fire area departments offered mutual aid to help with the firefight. The cause of the explosion and fire is now under investigation. No injuries have been reported.
