Woman Critical After Raging Brooklyn (NY) Apartment Fire Sparked by L-Ion Batteries

According to a report from ABC7, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) responded to a raging three-alarm fire that swept through an apartment building in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, New York, early Tuesday morning.

Heavy flames blew out from the second floor of the building on Goodwin Place just after 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.

One person was transported to a local hospital with injuries being described as critical.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Lithium ion batteries were found on scene, although there was no indication that they were the cause.

UPDATED 2/15/23:

The FDNY later said that the fire, which engulfed all three floors of the building and extended to the apartment building next door, was found to have been started by one of the 50 e-bikes and scooters bearing lithium-ion batteries on the first floor. The e-bikes and scooters were later removed by fire crews.

FDNY Chief Marshal Dan Flynn said that one resident was repairing the battery chargers.

FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh arrived on scene to survey the damage just one day after she sent a letter to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on the dangers of lithium-ion battery chargers for e-bikes and scooters.
