Edward Hamilton

Edward A. Hamilton died in early October 1983 at the age of 69. Hamilton was a 38 year veteran of the Memphis Fire Department and served as chief for 14 years. He retired in 1973. Prior to his appointment as chief, he had been with the department for 25 years.

After joining the department in 1935, Hamilton moved through the ranks. In 1938 he was promoted to driver, lieutenant in 1940, captain in 1944, battalion chief in 1950, deputy chief in 1958 and chief in 1960.

He was the first chief to carry full responsibility for administration, staff, finances and the operation of the department.
