Fire Department of New York (FDNY) resources were stretched to the limits Monday morning, September 18, after a violent collision between a charter bus and a city bus in the borough of Queens.

The two buses collided around 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of Northern Boulevard and Main Street in downtown Flushing, an extremely busy traffic and pedestrian area. The impact sent the two buses careening onto the sidewalk and into a row of stores.

FDNY units were quickly on the scene and initiated search and extrication procedures for the drivers and passengers of the buses. There was also major structural damage to the building, so immediate shoring was a priority.

Three people were killed and at least a dozen others injured, with most being transported to three area hospitals. As of noon time, units were still operating at an active scene.
