The Spencerport (NY) Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on New York State Route 531 at the overpass of Union Street in the town of Ogden. Arriving apparatus and chiefs found a single car-accident with entrapment and the car hanging over the abutment of about 20 feet.

Many aspects of technical rescue were deployed, including securing the vehicle to the ground, using ropes to secure personnel, and vehicle extrication. Limited access also presented a problem on the divided highway overpass.

Spencerport paramedics specially requested a RSI paramedic from the Barnard Fire District and, later, the Monroe County Medical Director, to the scene.

Additional resources included a heavy wrecker from Jim’s Service in Churchville. Coincidentally, T&R Rescue Solutions had just conducted a three-day training seminar on the use of towing and recovery equipment at incidents that many on scene personnel had attended.

The highway was closed in both directions for about two hours.

One woman was transported with serious injuries to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
