NJ Firefighters Respond to Fire in Multiple Dwellings

Structural Firefighting: NJ Firefighters Respond to Fire in Two Dwellings

Story and photo by Ted Aurig

On March 24, 2013 a dwelling fire was reported around 6 p.m in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

Command 1100 reported a dwelling, garage, and boat heavily involved with fire already extending into the exposure dwelling. The Al- Hands box was struck.

Firefighters secured water supplies and went into operation with multiple handlines. Command reported heavy fire conditions on the second floors of both dwellings. The truck company went into operation with the ladder pipe with fire through the roof in the rear of one of the dwellings.

After an aggressive interior attack in both dwellings, firefighters were pulled from the buildings because of worsening fire conditions.

Crews placed multiple 2 ½-inch lines, the deck gun, and ladder pipe in operation in a defensive operation.

The fire was knocked down and placed under control around the one-hour mark. Multiple cats were rescued from a dwelling.

Both dwellings were occupied. Neighbors alerted the family that his house was on fire.

A total of four houses were damaged in the fire. The exposures in the rear suffered heat damage and direct flame contact damage.

Press reports indicated the fire started in the unattached garage and spread to the dwellings.

No firefighter injuries were reported. The Pennsauken Fire Department has the fire under investigation.
