NJ Firefighter Dies After Responding to Five-Alarm Fire

A firefighter in New Jersey died of a medical emergency following his response to a major fire earlier this month, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

On Sunday, October 16, 2022, Firefighter Kevin G. May, 29, of the Westwood Fire Department responded as part of a mutual aid assignment to a five-alarm house fire in Upper Saddle River. The next morning, Monday, October 17, 2022, he was experiencing chest pains and had difficulty breathing. He was immediately rushed to the local hospital where a stent procedure was performed. He was released from the hospital on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Five-Alarm Fire Destroys Large NJ Home

On Monday morning, October 24, 2022, Firefighter May was found unresponsive. CPR was initiated and 911 was called. All efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. The cause of his death was an apparent heart attack.
