NIOSH Report Looks at Deaths of Philly Firefighters in Warehouse Fire

A local news station reported on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigation into the deaths of two Philadelphia firefighters in an April 2012 warehouse fire.

Lt. Robert Neary, 60, and firefighter Daniel Sweeney, 25, were killed in a five-alarm fire in the city’s Kensington section.

Following a 19-month probe, the report says the vacant, deteriorating warehouse posed a potentially deadly danger to firefighters, according to a CBS review (http://cbsloc.al/1dvJJfO). NIOSH listed it as “critica,” the second highest threat level rating, but despite nine complaints to the city’s Licenses and Inspections Department and 65 people living in the vacant warehouse, “no violations were recorded” following an inspection in February 2012.
