According to a report from ABC7, at least nine Fire Department of New York (FDNY) firefighters were hurt in a five-alarm fire that spread to four homes in Woodside section of Queens Tuesday night.
The FDNY was dispatched to 37-18 59th Street in Woodside at around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. Crews arrived to one home fully engulfed in flames that eventually spread to three neighboring homes.
FDNY Chief John Hodgens said the wind was “definitely a factor” in the rapid spread of the fire.
Fire crews as well as police remained on scene Wednesday morning in anticipation of the winds potentially rekindling the fire.
Nine firefighters were transported to Cornell Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Kelly Gonzalez, a neighbor who made the initial call, said the incident unfolded in about 15 minutes.
Hodges says firefighters arrived on scene in less than four minutes.
Eighteen residents were displaced. Each home is now considered a total loss.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
