NIKE and IAFC Partner to Benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

Fairfax, VA, October 24, 2001-The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), in conjunction with the Nike Corporation, is sponsoring “Run Across America.” The event, established to recognize the contributions of America’s first responders following the September 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and a national police survivors’ foundation.

The Run began on October 11 at the Astoria (OR) Fire Department. The majority of participants in the cross-country relay are Nike runners and staff. Each day’s run ends at a specified fire station. The team is expected to reach New York City on November 21 and will visit 43 fire stations across the country.

Localities along the route are encouraged to join with their local law enforcement counterparts to welcome the runners in some way. Nike has given each fire department $500 in seed money to use as their community donation or to help support additional fundraising activities.
