NFPA Decision: 1710/1720 Stand

Quincy, Mass.- On July 10, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards Council voted to issue the 2001 editions of NFPA 1710/1720 with the addition of an equivalency statement. The Council recently considered appeals to the proposed 2001 editions of NFPA 1710, Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Career Fire Departments, and NFPA 1720, Standard for the Organization and Deployment of Fire Suppression Operations, Emergency Medical Operations, and Special Operations to the Public by Volunteer Fire Departments.

The added equivalency statement follows:

1.3 Equivalency. Nothing in this standard is intended to prohibit the use of systems, methods, or approaches of equivalent or superior performance to those prescribed in this standard. Technical documentation shall be submitted to the Authority Having Jurisdiction to demonstrate equivalency.

The Council also directs that the Technical Committees responsible for NFPA 1710/1720 enter these documents into the revision cycle reporting to the 2004 Annual Meeting.

A longer version of the NFPA decision is expected to be released next week.
