On Saturday, March 5, Four Nash County (NC) fire companies battled a fast-moving fire at the Battle Grocery Store, a old-time landmark grocery store in Salem, North Carolina, on 10183 Straight Gate Road. The store closed in 2001.

Fire departments from Salem, Whitakers, Battleboro, Red Oak,  and Nash EMS responded to the scene. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire showing. It took 28 firefighters about 30 minutes to have the fire under control.

Firefighters remained on the scene for more than two hours over hauling. The fire reported to have started from an outside brush and grass  fire in the rear yard of the building. The building was a total loss.  No injuries were reported.
