On February 24, 2019 at 11:23 p.m., three Nash County (NC) fire departments were dispatched to 209 S. Railroad Street in Whitakers section of Edgecombe County for a fire in a large wooden dwelling. Nash County fire departments responded from Station 10 Whitakers, Station 9 Battleboro, Station 18 Salem. and a special call was made for Station 301 Enfield fire departments for their ladder company from Halifax County. Whitakers firefighters could see heavy fire and flames showing while responding to their station, which was only four blocks from the burning building.
Engine 10 was the first engine out and arrived on location and reported a large 1 1/2-story wood frame dwelling with heavy fire showing and part of the front of the building was collapsing. They led off with two 1 3/4-inch attack lines. Engine 9 arrived and laid a 5-inch supply line from the hydrant located on the corner and send their firefighters forward with another 1 3/4 line to assist Whitakers. The members of Station 18 were arriving and sent there firefighters forward to assist in the fire attack.
It took 35 firefighters over an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control. They remained on the scene for quite awhile into the night, hitting hot spots and overhauling. The residents were not at home at the time of the fire, they were away visiting relatives. There were no reported injuries to any firefighters and the house was totally destroyed. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshall office.
