NAMES IN THE NEWS

JEFF SHUPE received the Cleveland (OH) Fire Department’s Firefighter of the Year award and was cited for his more than 33 years of service. He is assigned on an engine company, and during his career has served with some the city’s busiest companies.


Shupe (photo, center) has been awarded two medals of valor. He began his career with the East Cleveland Fire Department. He also teaches at the Cleveland Fire Training Academy and the Ohio Fire Academy. Shupe conducts training for firefighters across the country and is a regular Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) presenter.

JOHN JOSEPH FREIDHOFF, a 12-year veteran of the Lake Erie Beach (NY) Volunteer Fire Company, passed away in a diving accident in Lake Ontario, September 19. He was a firefighter, an emergency medical technician, a hazardous materials technician, a Coast Guard Reservist, and was active with the Advanced Local Emergency Rescue Team organization (ALERT). Representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Customs, Niagara (Ontario) EMS, ALERT, Fort Erie (Ontario) Fire Department, the Chicago (IL) Fire Department; and local firefighters attended the funeral. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Company, 9483 Lakeshore Road, Angola, NY 14006.

JOHN SACHEN, an industrial training coordinator with the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute, was named the institute’s Instructor of the Year. He was also recognized for receiving the Highest Multiple Course Instructor Performance Rating with two perfect 4.0 class member evaluations during the rating period. Sachen is also the hazmat officer and fire instructor for the Delta (MO) Fire Protection District and serves on the advisory board for the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC).
