Dee Rogers Retires

San Diego Fire Chief Dee J. Rogers, a veteran fire fighter with 34 years service, retired on January 20. He had been chief since January 1975.

Rogers was appointed to the San Diego Fire Department on September 19, 1944. His successful climb to department head involved promotions to engineer in November 1950, lieutenant in July 1956, captain in October 1961, battalion chief in July 1967, assistant chief in July 1972, and deputy chief in February 1974.

As fire chief he developed a three-year fire apparatus replacement program, replacing outdated fire apparatus with 29 new pieces of equipment. The program necessitated a city council appropriation of $3 million in capital improvement funds. During his tenure, three fire stations were opened—Station 13 in La Jolla, Station 39 in Tierrasanta and Station 6 in Otay Mesa.

Rogers serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Burn Medicine for San Diego and Imperial Counties; on the executive board of the Metropolitan Committee of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and on the advisory board to the Assembly Select Committee on Fire Services.
