ANTHONY STRAVINO has been appointed chief for the Deerfield Beach (FL) Fire/Rescue Department. He replaces retiring Chief Gary Lother. Stravino, a 29-year veteran of the department, holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and has been a Florida-certified paramedic for 27 years. He will be responsible for managing fire, EMS, and emergency management functions for the south Florida city of 85,000. During his career, Stravino rose through the ranks and has managed the EMS, training, administrative services, resource management, and fleet services divisions.

● International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Executive Director GARRY BRIESE announced his resignation at the association’s Strategic Planning and Leadership Forum in McLean, Virginia. Briese, association executive director since 1985, told the more than 200 IAFC leaders present that he will be taking a position in the private sector in February, 2007, and will be relocating to Colorado. According to IAFC President Chief Jim Harmes, the board has discussed the adoption of a CEO transition plan that includes a national search for a new executive director.
