CHIEF DAVE CASEY   >> CHIEF DAVE CASEY was appointed as Director of Louisiana State University’s Carrol L. Herring Fire & Emergency Training Institute. As Director, Casey will oversee all municipal training and certification initiatives, regional- and academy-based. A 37-year fire service veteran, he previously was Florida’s State Fire Training Director and Chief for Clay County. Casey was lead author of the Live Fire Training Principles & Practice textbook and coauthored the Fire Engineering DVD series “The Right Seat—Officer Development Beyond the Textbook” and was one of the primary developers of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors Live Fire Trainer credentialing course.

>> JILL CALLIHAN of Franklinton, Louisiana, was awarded Columbia Southern University’s (CSU’s) Hero Behind the Hero Scholarship, which honors the spouses and children of active-duty public safety personnel (firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, and dispatchers) and National Guard and military men and women and covers tuition for up to 24 months for one specific online degree program with CSU. Callihan is the wife of Bryce Callihan, a firefighter with St. Tammy Parish Fire District 1 in Slidell, Louisiana. Callihan’s desire to serve the public is reflected in her work with the women’s crisis center in her area. www.ColumbiaSouthern.edu.

>> CLARENCE A. CUNHA was officially named the new chief of the Providence (RI) Fire Department. Cunha began his career assigned to Engine Company 3. He then served nine years in the special hazards unit. In December 1991, Cunha was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in charge of Engine Company 12 at the Admiral Street Station. In December 1999, he was promoted to the rank of captain and ran Engine Company 2. He later ran Engine Company 10 at the Broad Street Station. In April 2013, Cunha was promoted to the rank of battalion chief. He later served as deputy assistant chief, and was appointed as acting chief on September 16, 2013.

>> STEVE WILLIAMS was named as the Illinois Fire Service Institute’s (IFSI’s) Instructor of the Month for February 2014. Williams has been an instructor for IFSI for more than 40 years and is its longest current serving instructor. He is best known for teaching self-contained breathing apparatus and basic skills to new firefighters at IFSI’s annual Fire College as well as coordinating more than 100 classes during his tenure with the institute. He is retired from the Cairo (IL) Fire Department. The institute recognizes instructors each month from nominations from field staff and leadership. www.fsi.illinois.edu.
