The Royal Oak (MI) Fire Department came out in support of young patients at at annual event at William Beaumont Hospital. Fire photographer Dennis Walus provided some photos of the event–perched atop a 135-foot Royal Oak ladder.

The Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams program began in 2017 and was designed to bring a little holiday cheer to pediatric patients, according to a release.

“Many children are unable to leave their rooms and can feel isolated in the hospital as the rest of the world continues without them,” Beaumont Children’s Child Life Supervisor Kathleen Grobbel said.

Jim Cook, assistant chief of the Royal Oak Fire Department, said members of the department support Moonbeams for Sweet Dreams every night in December. Other fire departments, such as the Southfield Fire Department, also join the cause, he said.

“We rotate stations and get the ladder trucks out there,” he said. “The guys took it upon themselves to allocate it out so we get different people and different trucks.”

At 8 p.m. every evening in December, pediatric patients shine flashlights from their hospital windows and look for community members standing outside the hospital to flash them back.
