The bodies of a man and a girl were found after a fire ripped through an apartment unit Monday afternoon in south Sacramento’s Parkway neighborhood.

Sacramento Fire Department crews were called just before 4 p.m. to the blaze on the 5400 block of Mack Road and arrived to find flames and heavy smoke pouring from a second-story unit. A second alarm was called for the fire that affected at least one unit in the Stonegate apartment complex just west of Center Parkway.

While crews initially said all of the building’s occupants were able to evacuate safely, firefighters later said they had found the bodies of a man and a girl in one room of the burned-out apartment.

Both victims are expected to be identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, pending notification of relatives.

The cause of the fire was ongoing, fire officials said.
