Line-of-Duty Deaths, 1999

July 4: Captain Roger McEwen, 52, of the Hanover Volunteer Fire Department, Rockford, Alabama, and one of its founding members, died of a massive heart attack while fighting a fire in a modular home.

July 7: Lieutenant Larry Lehman, 51, a 35-year veteran of the Lebanon (PA) Volunteer Fire Department, suffered a fatal heart attack while directing traffic at the scene of a brush fire.

July 9: Firefighter Costello N. Robinson, a 36-year veteran of the Washington, D.C., Fire Department, died of a massive heart attack while hospitalized and awaiting surgery for a separate injury suffered while on a smoke investigation.

July 15: Firefighter Bryan Pottberg, 25, a four-year member of the Lee`s Summit (MO) Fire Department, died after experiencing difficulties while participating in a dive exercise.

July 18: Firefighter Martin Stiles. 40, of the Los Angeles County Fire Camp 19, died while clearing a fire break at a brush fire in Ventura County, California. He slipped and fell off a 150-foot drop.
