March Issue Informative

Ellington, Conn.:

While Fire Engineering always has useful articles, the March issue was exceptionally good. The Volunteers Corner, and articles on New Types of Construction…, 2-Team Rescue System and a Different Technique for Buddy Breathing were all very relevant for me as a volunteer. Thank you for putting together such an informative issue.

Changes Observed in Fire Service

Plainfield, N.J.:

After about 45 years of being a subscriber to Fire Engineering, I am bowing out because of retirement. Your magazine and my interest have gone through many changes in the fire business. From the days of the leatherlunged heedless fire fighter to these days carefully taught and protected college graduate, we have seen them all.

Many good men have left the scene but lots of them added something to the modern system—some of them because of injury or death. Fire Engineering magazine has contributed greatly as the best and most varied of the technical journals in the field.

We no longer see a rash of fatal hotel fires across the continent. No more do we see strange chemicals or unusual hazards surprising fire departments in many areas. The fire fighting critiques are no longer unusual. Even the rookie has heard about oxygen generating chemicals and flame propagators. The name of that game is communicat ing and Fire Engineering has done it very well!

I am sorry to say goodbye, but I know a great service will continue and I hope get even better!
