LAFD Firefighters Rescue Multiple People Stranded on Roof During Fire

City of Los Angeles Fire Department

City of Los Angeles (CA) Fire Department (LAFD) firefighters rescued multiple people sheltering on a roof during a downtown commercial fire yesterday, according to reports.

LAFD crews responded at 7:20 p.m. on March 24, 2021, to 1603 S. San Pedro St. as thick black smoke billowed from the building, according to ABC 7.

Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down and extended a ladder to the roof of the building to reached those who were trapped, the report said. Once stairwells were cleared, the people were led down and evaluated.

According to the LAFD PIO, more than 100 firefighters conducted a closely coordinated operation using aerial ladder from the freeway to send firefighters to the roof to secure the people sheltering atop the building. The roof was deemed a safe location (concrete, poured in place high rise) and the occupants were kept in place.

At the same time, crews on fire attack quickly ascended the building, located, and extinguished fire on both the second and third floors in 29 minutes. A primary and secondary search was clear and no other occupants were found.

ABC7 noted that the eight people on the building’s roof were taking part in a photo shoot.
