Aug. 26—Two Joplin firefighters were taken to a hospital Sunday for treatment after they suffered heat-related illnesses while battling a fire.

Their names were not released by the city.

They were taken by ambulance to the hospital. One was treated and released, and the other was admitted to the hospital for further observation and treatment but later released.

The department was called at 7:45 p.m. Sunday to a house near the intersection of Second Street and High Avenue.

Firemen found the two-story home heavily involved in a fire that had spread to adjacent vehicles and a storage building.

When the fire department began to knock back the fire, a search found no one in the house.

The Joplin fire marshal is investigating the blaze. It appears to have started on the porch outside the residence; however, a cause of the fire is still being determined. Firefighters had the fire under control approximately 30 minutes after arrival. Twenty-five firefighters were used to control the blaze, and the fire department finished its work at the scene at 11 p.m.

The department received assistance from METS ambulance, the Joplin Police Department and the Salvation Army for canteen services.
