John Sachen Passes Away

John Sachen, a longtime FDIC advisory board member and contributor to Fire Engineering, passed away on Friday, June 21.

John was the hazmat/training officer for the Delta (MO) Fire Protection District. He was chief instructor and hazardous-materials specialist with Fire Technology, Ltd., which produces fire training videos and specializes in on-site fire safety and hazardous-materials training.

An industrial training coordinator with the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute, in 2007 Sachen was named the institute’s Instructor of the Year. He was also recognized for receiving the Highest Multiple Course Instructor Performance Rating with two perfect 4.0 class member evaluations during the rating period

Sachen had served in both career and non-career public and industrial fire departments with responsibilities for structural firefighting, training, hazmat, confined space, and management. His industrial career includes product development and marketing with General Dynamics during three different employment periods, according to Deputy Chief Billy Goldfeder of the Loveland-Symmes (OH) Fire Department.

Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.
