Investigation into West Virginia Firefighter’s Death in Cell Tower Collapse

A volunteer fire department is being investigated following the death of a member of another department during the response to a cellphone tower collapse earlier this month.

Claims Journal reports that the Summit Park Volunteer Fire Department is being investigated after complaints by relatives of Nutter Fort Volunteer Fire Department member Michael Garrett and other firefighters.

Garrett was killed along with two workers on February 1 when he was responding to a 300-foot cellphone tower collapse. Garrett reportedly died in the collapse of a secondary communications antenna while rendering aid to one of the injured contractors from the initial cell tower collapse. Two other contractors working on the larger tower were hurt and taken to a hospital.

Garrett’s relatives and other Nutter Fort firefighters question whether Summit Park had an adequate number of firefighters and equipment. They also have questioned whether the department is properly registered with the state.
