Sixteen students and one alumnus were practicing for an upcoming play when several of the students smelled smoke in the Fisher Hall Building at Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Fourteen people left immediately and three attempted to find the source of the smell; a person encountered smoke on the second floor of the building and came down alerted the other two students and they left the building and called 911.

Fortunately the students were there and the fire department was notified before the fire could advance and destroy the entire building. Initially it was reported that only three people were in the building, but actually there were three people that stayed in the building and tried to find the source of the smoke.

Indianapolis firefighters found smoke showing upon arrival and made an aggressive offensive interior attack using three 1 3/4-inch handlines. The fire was under control in 25 minutes. Damage is estimated at $250,000.

One alumnus suffered slight smoke inhalation but was not transported.
