IN Chief Speaks Out After Closed Interior Doors Contain House Fire

According to a report from WISHTV, Yorktown (IN) Fire Department (YFD) Chief David Boone spoke out about the importance of always closing interior doors after a weekend house fire in his town kept the home from becoming a total loss, slowing the spread of the flames, smoke, and heat.

Boone said the room-and-contents fire was contained to the living room because the homeowner had shut the bedroom door.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the incident, but closing doors, especially when sleeping, can be a life-saving technique.

The Daleville-Salem Township Fire Department assisted the YFD in the response and supplied the following scene photos:

Boone explained that a closed door stops the push of smoke and heat into that room. He also noted that residential doors can still ignite in large-scale fires, so other safety precautions are necessary.

Boone said it is good to have a plan in place such as alternate means of escape as well as a meeting place for everyone inside the home once they are out of danger. Working smoke detectors are also essential important to have in the home and to frequently check their batteries.
