Illinois Fire Service Institute Library is One of 30 Finalists for the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service

CHAMPAIGN (MARCH 20,  2017) – The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) today announced that the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) Library is among the 30 finalists for the 2017 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. Finalists are chosen because of their significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. National Medal for Museum and Library Service winners will be announced this spring.

“The 2017 National Medal Finalists represent the leading museums and libraries that serve as catalysts for change in their communities,” said Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew, director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

“Our Library and Archive, and its associated service activities are an essential element of the IFSI mission – helping firefighters do their work through training, education, information, and research,” Royal Mortenson, the Director of IFSI, said. “This recognition underscores how the IFSI Library is a valuable resource for the more than 42,000 firefighters in Illinois,” Lian Ruan, Head Librarian said. “The library’s accessibility via online and local libraries makes it especially valuable to volunteer firefighters who make up nearly 75% of all Illinois firefighters.”
