IFSI Introduces and Schedules New Leadership Development Program

(CHAMPAIGN, IL. September 23, 2015). The University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) has scheduled its first offering of the Leadership Development and Decision Making (LDDM) in the Fire Service Program class.  The 40-hour LDDM class is scheduled for November 16-20 at IFSI’s Champaign, Illinois campus.

“This class is the first full pilot of our new generation of leadership training and development for the fire service,” Royal Mortenson, Director of IFSI said. “The program is the culmination of three years’ work of collaboration, planning and development to deliver a comprehensive leadership development program and curriculum that addresses the leadership challenges of the fire service at every level and rank.”

During the first four days of the five-day class, students are introduced to each topic through a Socratic teaching style, engaging them through highly interactive small group discussions, ethical and moral discussion groups/decision games, tactical decision games, sand table exercises/discussions, and practical application exercises.  The last day of the class puts students through a full-scale practical exercise on the fireground.

The November class has a total limited enrollment of 42: 20 firefighters, 12 company officers and 10 chief officers. “We will have three levels of fire service engaged in the class. The intent is to use common lines of education across all ranks so that students learn from their peers as much as from the instructors,” Jim Moore, LDDM Program Director for IFSI said.

The class tuition is $500. Registration is available through the IFSI web site at www.fsi.illinois.edu. For more information, contact Jim Moore at 217/300-3463 or jpmoore1@illinois.edu.

The Illinois Fire Service Institute is the statutory State Fire Academy for Illinois. In addition to training provided at its Champaign campus, the Institute offers one-day hands-on classes for fire departments at Regional Training Centers and local fire stations across the State.  The mission of the Illinois Fire Service Institute is to help firefighters do their work through training, education, information and research.
