According to a report from KCTV, fire investigators are looking at a discarded cigar fueled by high winds as the cause of an overnight house fire in Overland Park, Kansas.
Overland Park (OPFD) and Leawood Fire Department crews responded to the 8600 block of West 142nd Terrace just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. On arrival, first-arriving units reported smoke showing from the front door of the two-story single-family home. All residents escaped to safety.
Firefighters found a small fire on the home’s back deck with fire extension into the basement. Crews brought the fire under control in less than 20 minutes.
Fire damage was contained to the basement, but the home suffered moderate smoke damage. No injuries were reported.
This incident was the latest in several incidents to which the OPFD has responded in the past two days that may have resulted from discarded smoking materials being ignited by high winds.
