Gas Color Code Dropped

Gas Color Code Dropped

A proposal for developing a color coding system for compressed gas packages has been abandoned by the Materials Transportation Bureau of the U. S. Department of Transportation. The bureau explained, in terminating the proposal October 5, that some mixtures of gases would require up to five colors for identification and the constant development of new mixtures would necessitate frequent revision of the reference source.

The bureau also noted that 10 to 15 percent of the working population is color blind to some degree. The present system of labels and placards was regarded as adequate.
