GA Firefighter Dies on His First Shift

The U.S. Fire Administration had a report on a young firefighter with the St. Marys (GA) Fire Department who passed away on his first shift.

On Saturday morning, April 17, 2021, Firefighter Efren Medina, 20, while working his first 24-hour shift as a firefighter, passed away in his sleep at the firehouse. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.

According to a St. Marys Fire Department Facebook post announcing his death, Firefighter Medina was known for his long time passion for firefighting and his love of the fire service.

According to FirstCoastNews.com, Firefighter Medina and other members had responded to an overnight fire. The crew returned to the firehouse at 3:30 a.m., and when the other firefighters woke up later that morning, they noticed Firefighter Medina was not responding.
