According to a report from WREG, the Memphis (TN) Fire Department (MFD) said that an apartment fire that killed four young children Wednesday afternoon was an accidental, igniting between the kitchen and bedroom because of rigged wiring.
MFD crews were dispatched to the two-story apartment building in the 400 block of East Alston in South Memphis just before 3 p.m.
“It hurt me to see my daughter hurting and it hurts me, and it’s hurting my whole family,” Davis said.
He said the children were at home with their father while their mother ran an errand.
MFD said two of the children were four years old, one was two, and another was six. The children’s grandfather, Patrick Davis, identified the victims as Marcus, Markese, Malaysia, and Makayla Walker. All were under the age of six.
A witness said she was driving on the street when she saw flames and smoke. The woman and her boyfriend pulled over to help, and local kids told them they attempted to call 911, but couldn’t get through. The woman said her boyfriend attempted to enter the apartment, but the flames were too intense.
The MFD looked to have brought the fire under control by around 5 p.m.
Memphis Police have detained the children’s father, but no charges had been filed. The investigation continues to be ongoing.
