According to a report from ABC7, four residents and one firefighter were injured after a 36-unit apartment building in Park Ridge, Illinois, erupted in flames and incurred major damage Tuesday night.
Fire crews responded just before 11 p.m. to Bristol Court in the 200-block of Thames Parkway with news from neighbors of possible trapped occupants on the top floor as large flames were seen coming from a top-floor window.
Crews extinguished the fire at around 3:30 a.m. As of early Wednesday, crews were still on scene to extinguish any hotspots, especially on the top floor.
Park Ridge fire officials said the four residents suffered smoke inhalation but did not have any life-threatening injuries. At least one person remained hospitalized as of Wednesday morning, and the resident’s condition is unknown.
The hospitalized firefighter suffered a leg injury but has been released.
Residents said new smoke detectors were responsible for saving their lives, with the cause of the fire being believed to be accidental.
