safety officer drill monitoring company progress

As an incident safety officer, what observations and information do you need to monitor the progress of crews working at an incident? Another function that the safety officer performs while they are completing scene surveys and monitoring of incident conditions is to evaluate the progress of fire suppression activities.

Knowledge of suppression activities is key to this function. The safety officer must be aware of factors that indicate progress, crew location and operational needs of the companies to evaluate the effectiveness of the operation. Progress reports from crews along with visual cues will often provide feedback.

Consider the indicators of company progress that are provided and answer the sample scenarios as if you were the incident safety officer at a fire scene. Consider that crews are operating in IDLH areas that are toxic in smoke, high in temperature, and low in visibility.
