Stockton (CA) Fire Captain Shot and Killed at Fire, 67-Year-Old Suspect in Custody

A Stockton fire captain was shot and killed at around 5 a.m. Monday while responding to a dumpster fire that was threatening a building .

The incident played out as firefighters from Engine 2 were extinguishing the dumpster fire. Gunshots rang out and a firefighter was struck by a bullet.

The victim is Captain Max Fortuna, 47, a 21-year veteran of the Stockton Fire Department. Firefighters at the scene immediately began attempting to resuscitate him; they transported him to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Stockton Police responded to the scene at 142 South Aurora St. at 5:02 a.m., called to the scene by the fire department. Upon arrival they apprehended a 67-year-old man, believed to be the shooter. They took him into custody along with a weapon found at the scene.

Captain Fortuna leaves behind a wife and two grown children, officials said at a press conference.
