The Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department (IFD) responded to a reported fire at the convent of St. Bernadette Catholic Church this afternoon.
When the IFD firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the convent, according to a report from the IFD media relations division. On entry, they found fire in a second-floor room. Firefighters controlled the fire within 30 minutes.
The smoke and heat from the fire was very intense. A firefighter and one civilian, a 48-year-old sister of the convent, were injured slightly and transported to area medical centers. The firefighter suffered a slight burn while the nun was transported for evaluation.
The fire is under investigation to determine its cause. Damage is estimated to be around $55,000. The church is handling the relocation of the several sisters who stayed in the convent.
This fire came on the heels of a fire at a Catholic church in downtown Indianapolis.
