Female Firefighter’s Bias Claim Against Phoenix Fire Department Settled

The Phoenix (AZ) City Council voted to settle a $70,000 claim leveled against the city’s fire department by a female firefighter who alleged colleagues engaged in sexual harassment and discrimination against her for years.

The Arizona Republic reported (http://bit.ly/Q8ExDc) that although council members were nearly unanimous in supporting the settlement, the vote highlighted deep divisions over the fire department’s handling of the investigation and one councilman’s allegations of a cover-up.

More than a dozen female firefighters turned up at the Wednesday meeting to speak out against comments by Councilman Sal DiCiccio, which they said had unfairly portrayed the fire department as having a “boys club” culture and widespread problems with harassment. They brought a letter of support signed by 46 female firefighters that described their positive experiences.
