FDNY Firefighters Rescue Unconscious Victim from Brooklyn Fire

FDNY firefighters Ladder 120 Brooklyn rescue

Firefighters with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) managed to rescue an unconscious victim from an apartment fire Wednesday morning in Brooklyn.

At 9:50 am, the FDNY responded to a fire in an apartment building at 315 Sutter Ave. Members of Ladder 120 were told a victim was trapped, so they made way to the fourth-floor apartment, forced entry without the protection of a hoseline, and found an unconscious victim.

“Upon arrival, units were met with a heavy fire condition in apartment 4B. They forced the door to the apartment and entered without the protection of a charged hoseline,” said Battalion Chief James Ahren. “Ladder 120 made their way in, located a civilian and removed him to the street and handed him off to EMS where care was provided.”

“We had multiple people advising us before we even got in the building that there was an occupant trapped in apartment 4B. We knew we had somebody in there who definitely needed to be tended to,” said Lieutenant Salvatorre Mirra of Ladder 120. “So, myself and my inside team immediately ascended to the fourth floor where we came out of the stairwell, and we had a heavy smoke condition. We made our way to the door, and forced the door. Upon initially doing our searches, once we passed the hallway by the kitchen, we found an unconscious victim on the floor. We didn’t have a hose line to protect us at the time. We knew there was someone in there so we couldn’t wait. We had to make a lifesaving decision which is what we train for.”

The patient was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. According to a release from the FDNY PIO, 11 other patients suffering nonlife-threatening injuries were transported, as well.
