Fallen Firefighters Foundation launches scholarship program

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has established the “Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Scholarship Program” for the spouses and children of firefighters who lost their lives while engaged in the performance of their duties. A minimum of four scholarships for education and job skill training will be presented annually beginning in 1997.

Sarbanes, of Maryland, sponsored legislation that established the official national memorial in Emmitsburg and created the Foundation. The announcement of the scholarship was made by Foundation Chairman Gerard F. Scannell at the 15th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, held on October 15, 1996, at the site of the Memorial.

Additional information on the program may be obtained from the Foundation at (301) 447-1370. The e-mail address is fire heroes@fema.gov, and the Internet web site is www.usfa.fema.gov.
