Firefighters responded earlier this week to a fire that destroyed a 4,000-square-foot home in Fairfield, New Jersey.
At just before 1000 on May 23, 2016, Fairfield (NJ) Fire Department responded to a house fire at 11 Ralph Dr. Units arrived to find a working fire in the attached garage of the large, 2.5-story private dwelling. Fire was already extending into the second floor and attic as lines were stretched into the home and the truck went to the roof for ventilation.
Mutual aid companies were requested to the scene from West Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Verona and N. Caldwell. As conditions deteriorated and with heavy fire in the attic, command pulled all members out of the building and units switched to an exterior defensive attack. Crews used one tower ladder and numerous handlines as heavy fire broke through the roof.
After approximately 30 minutes, the bulk of the fire was knocked down and members re-entered the building to hit hot spots and overhaul. All visible fire was extinguished by 1130 and the fire was declared under control not long after. The cause of the fire is unknown and at least one firefighter was treated by EMS.
