Elderly Couple Dies in Four-Alarm MO House Fire

According to a report from KSDK, an elderly couple in their 80s died in a St. Charles County, Missouri, house fire Thursday morning.

New Melle Fire Department (NMFD) Chief Kevin Martin said the call came in overnight, and NMFD crews arrived to the 800 block of Tall Cedar Court to discover heavy flames on the side of a house.

Martin said that, because the flames came up through the floor, the fire is thought to have started in the basement and spread to two upstairs bedrooms, where the couple was sleeping.

The home was suffered heavy fire damage to the bedrooms, but the damage throughout the rest of the home wasn’t as severe, Martin said.

The couple, identified by St. Charles County police as Kenneth and Phyllis Zerr, both 84, perished in the fire.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal is now investigating the cause of the fire Thursday.
