According to a report from NBC4, a massive fire tore through Yonkers, New York, row houses Sunday afternoon, displacing nearly 100 residents and injuring 13 Yonkers Fire Department (YFD) firefighters, mostly related to the day’s high temperatures.
The fire was expected to have ignited in the backyard of a home on Maple Street that quickly spread to four nearby houses. Flames could be seen shooting from the roof, and thick, black smoke covered the entire neighborhood. At one point, every YFD firefighter was on the scene to extinguish the fast-moving fire.
YFD members were dispatched just after 4 p.m. for a call of furniture igniting at one of the homes. The flames then spread to three other homes. The Red Cross reported that 30 families have been displaced, including 37 children.
Investigators are looking into how the furniture became ignited, and the arson squad is part of the investigation, although that is the usual protocol of a fire of this magnitude.
