Diesel Exhaust Study
The early results of a study of the health effects of diesel exhaust appears encouraging, according to reports from the Southwest Research Institute (SRI), which is conducting the study.
About 5,000 rats, mice and hamsters are being tested for long term effects from exposure to diesel exhaust. Preliminary results show increased defense activity within the animal’s bodies but their organs show no evidence of carcinogenicity. General health and growth of the animals also does not appear to be impaired.
While these early results appear promising to proponents of diesel engines, the SRI cautions that a long term study is necessary for more conclusive results.
