Crews dispatched to the call in the 1200 block of M Street Northwest found fire in an eighth floor apartment of a nine-story occupied apartment building, according to the department’s X account.

The fire went to two alarms, and one firefighter reportedly declared a Mayday during the incident, although this was safely resolved. Firefighters rescued multiple residents in distress, including via an aerial tower.

Two civilians and one firefighter were transported with nonlife-threatening injuries. Acting Fire Chief Andre Edwards confirmed that there was one fatality.

Earlier in the morning, the department responded to a fire at a kiosk near the Lincoln Memorial that seriously injured an adult male victim, who was flown to an area trauma center by helicopter.
