FIREMAN’S FUND INSURANCE COMPANY and HOLMATRO® announce a nationwide agreement to support local fire departments. Holmatro will provide special pricing to Fireman’s Fund for vehicle extrication gear awarded through its Fireman’s Fund Heritage Program®. Fireman’s Fund’s national initiative provides equipment, training, and community education programs to local fire departments. Through a grant from QUALCOMM INCORPORATED, the SAN DIEGO (CA) POLICE FOUNDATION will award nine San Diego County fire agencies financial support totaling nearly $150,000 for programs that increase citizens’ disaster preparedness. The grant money will help purchase training equipment and facilitate a variety of programs, including the training of community emergency response teams. Recipient California fire agencies and programs are the following: Carlsbad Fire Department, Encinitas Fire & Marine Safety, National City Fire Department, Pala Fire Department, Palomar Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, Pauma Reservation Fire Department and Pauma Tribal Police Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, San Diego Rural Fire Protection District, and San Miguel Fire Protection District. www.sdpolicefoundation.org.

The Santa Clara County (CA) Fire Department awarded ADASHI a contract to put its First Response software in all of its emergency response vehicles. ADASHI will directly integrate with Santa Clara County’s dispatch system, automatically initiating and routing emergency units to an incident using maps and audible turn-by-turn directions. The department’s preplans will be viewable within ADASHI. Hazards, facility information, and site maps pop up automatically. www.adashi.org.

The NATIONAL VOLUNTEER FIRE COUNCIL (NVFC) announces that all NVFC state, department, and personal members are eligible to join the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s (FASNY) Federal Credit Union. Nationwide, NVFC members can now use the Union’s services and money-saving deposit and lending products. A new INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF STANDARDIZATION (ISO) standard for fire safety engineering, ISO 23932:2009, Fire safety engineering—General principles, provides an overview of how fire safety engineering analyses and assessments are conducted, with links to more specific standards, including those already published or under development. The principles in this standard cover any fire phenomena, including fire growth, hot gases, movement of effluents, and structural and compartmentation behavior. RESCUE VAC SYSTEMS, INC. was one of 10 winners at the 2009 Chicago Innovation Awards. Recognizing that trench collapse victims were dying because of extended rescue times (six to eight hours using shovels and buckets to remove dirt), Rescue Vac created the 800 series rescue kit. AWG FITTINGS, LLC announces Paul Carpenter as its new vice president sales—North America, and Steffen Kohleisen as its new general manager—North America. Carpenter was most recently director of sales for both Elkhart Brass and Hale Pumps. He also established Halprin Supply in Pennsylvania. Carpenter has served in the industry as an active volunteer firefighter, training officer, captain, assistant chief, and president of the West Chester (PA) Fire Training Center. Steffen was general manager of the Metz aerial product line at Rosenbauer and has been active with the NFPA 1901 aerial task force group for more than 10 years. He is an active volunteer firefighter with the Kennett Square (PA) Fire Department.

On October 2-4, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) held its 28th annual Memorial Weekend at the National Fire Academy campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The Memorial honored the 103 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2008 and 19 firefighters from previous years; their names added to the NFFF Memorial. The memorial service, attended by more than 5,000 family members, friends, and fire service members, featured a program of music, tributes, and the reading of names.
