>> The NATIONAL VOLUNTEER FIRE COUNCIL (NVFC) is accepting applications for the National Junior Firefighter Scholarship and Grant Program, sponsored by Dunkin’ Brands Community Foundation. Ten $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to junior firefighters nationwide who demonstrate commitment and dedication to their local junior firefighter program and the fire service. >> SCOTT HEALTH & SAFETY has made several charitable contributions though the Scott Technologies Foundation to numerous organizations that provide assistance or education to various fire service-related groups. Donations included $2,500 to the Charlotte Firefighters Association for fire prevention and education; $10,000 to the FDNY Foundation for WTC educational programs and firefighters’ health and welfare monitoring; $5,000 to the Firefighters’ Museum and Survive Alive, Inc. to support fire prevention and education; $10,000 to the First Responder Institute for grants to in-need fire departments nationally; $5,000 to the Gold Shield Foundation for aid to the families of firefighters who died the line of duty; $5,000 to Medlife of Houston, Inc. to enhance prehospital emergency care; $5,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to assist the families of fallen firefighters nationally; $5,000 to the National Volunteer Fire Council to support its advocacy of volunteer fire/EMS organizations; $2,500 to the Piedmont (NC) Firefighter’s Association for local fire education; $10,000 to the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation for the treatment and care of severely burned first responders; and $5,000 for the San Francisco Fire Fighters Cancer Prevention Foundation for early detection and prevention of firefighter-related cancers through annual screening and studies of firefighters throughout their careers and after retirement.

>> AKRON BRASS celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. The company began in 1918 when former B.F. Goodrich Rubber Company employees formed the Akron Brass Manufacturing company to produce couplings for the rapidly growing rubber-lined hose market. Production began in Akron, Ohio, and because of growth eventually moved to Wooster, incorporating in 1935. In 1962, Akron merged into the Premier Industrial Corporation of Cleveland. In 1996, Premier Industrial merged with Farnell PLC of the United Kingdom to become Premier Farnell PLC. Akron Brass has expanded its traditional product range to include scene lighting, junction boxes, reels, hand tools, warning lighting, general vehicular lighting, and multiplexing with its acquisition of GFE Manufacturing and Weldon Technologies.

>> PIERCE MANUFACTURING INC. received an order for 18 Contender® fire apparatus from the Lancaster County (SC) Fire Service. The order includes eight custom pumpers, eight rescue vehicles, and two dry-side tankers, including the state’s first fleet of Hercules™ compressed-air foam (CAFS) equipment. The apparatus will be delivered beginning in June 2008. Lancaster County covers an area of 549 square miles and is located just south of Charlotte, North Carolina. The county’s 19 fire departments are comprised of approximately 300 volunteer firefighters.

>> CRIMSON FIRE, INC. received an order for 10 identical custom pumpers from Hilton Head Island (SC) Fire and Rescue Department to replace its entire fleet. The pumpers, each with a pumping capacity of 1,500 gpm, will be built on Spartan Motors Advantage® cab and chassis and will each feature a Cummins ISL 400 hp engine, a 1495-3 aluminum body, a Foam Pro 2002 foam system, a 500-gallon propoly water tank with 25- and 60-gallon foam tanks, a Whelen LED warning light package, a Harrison eight-kw hydraulically driven generator, and an aluminum frame diamond-plate hosebed cover.

>> DRÄGER received the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Consumer Award for respiratory protection, which honors the

manufacturer that best fulfills customers’ respiratory protection needs regarding safety, ease of use, technical features, comfort, and design. The rating was based on two Frost & Sullivan studies concerning personal protective equipment. In these studies, equipment users and purchasers throughout the United States and Europe rated manufacturers on how satisfied they were with the products and solutions that the manufacturers offered for various segments. The respiratory protective devices offered from Dräger received the top rating among 11 manufacturers.

>> AMKUS RESCUE SYSTEMS, the Official Rescue System of International Speedway Corporation (ISC), received an award in appreciation of providing quality rescue equipment to the ISC’s Daytona (FL) International Speedway Fire Department for 25 years. AMKUS also received the NASCAR Track Services Mission Award for 2007, which recognizes an individual or organization that goes above and beyond contractual or personal obligation to support the Track Services team’s mission to improve the safety of all at every NASCAR event through continuing education, qualified training, and support for all track services personnel. AMKUS received the Environmental Stewardship Award from Orion Energy Services for saving 71,932 kWh annually by replacing its shop lighting.
